Chiron’s Orbit: Time in Each Zodiac Sign (1900–2100)
By Natal Chart Lab ·
Chiron does not spend equal time in each zodiac sign. In our JPL-based 1900-01-01 to 2100-12-28 window, it occupies Aries for 33.73 cumulative years and Libra for 6.86. The longest complete uninterrupted stays in this window are 8.15 years in Aries and 1.99 in Libra. These are measured window statistics, not fixed durations for every orbit.

Why the durations differ
Chiron’s eccentric orbit produces uneven orbital motion. Its apparent geocentric longitude also contains Earth’s perspective and retrograde loops. A zodiac sign is a 30° longitude interval; it is not an equal-time slice of the orbit. Orbital eccentricity explains the broad asymmetry, while geocentric observation and perturbations affect the detailed dates.
“Time in a sign” needs a definition. Here, total occupancy adds every interval actually inside the sign, including re-entries. An uninterrupted stay ends whenever Chiron leaves, even if it later returns. First entry to final departure is a different measure and may include time spent in another sign. Mixing those measures produces misleading comparisons.
A defined sample of Chiron return ages
For 140 reference births at 00:00 UTC on January 1 of each year from 1901 through 2040, we searched for the first exact return to the natal tropical longitude between ages 40 and 60. Ages use 365.25-day years. The minimum is 48.39, median 49.36 and maximum 50.84 years. This fixed-date cohort is a reproducible sample, not a population distribution or a guarantee for every birth date. Later exact crossings in a retrograde loop are excluded from this first-return statistic.
Data, method and boundaries
Source: NASA JPL Horizons API, 2060 Chiron, observer ecliptic longitude of date (quantity 31), geocentric; solution 2026-Jun-05_06:09:00. The bundled ephemeris samples apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude every five days, at 0.0001° storage resolution. The calculator interpolates with four points. We scan in six-hour steps and bisect each detected sign change. Computational refinement does not establish second-level ephemeris accuracy.
The JSON records the exact first and last available samples, 1900-01-01 00:00 UTC and 2100-12-28 00:00 UTC. All occupancy totals include the partial stays at the window edges; longest complete stays exclude both truncated edge stays. Our window is not an integer number of Chiron orbits, so shares should not be interpreted as timeless probabilities. The return search uses the same interpolated dataset and is not an independent Horizons validation.
