Frequently asked questions

Is Mercury retrograde right now?

Yes. Mercury has been retrograde since October 24, 2026 at 3:14 AM ET and turns direct on November 13, 2026 at 10:53 AM ET.

What does Mercury retrograde mean?

Seen from Earth, Mercury periodically appears to move backward against the stars for about three weeks. It is an optical effect of Earth overtaking Mercury's orbit. In astrology the period is associated with miscommunication, delays and revisiting the past.

How often is Mercury retrograde?

Three or four times a year, for about 19 to 24 days each time — roughly a fifth of the year.

How are these dates calculated?

We find the moment Mercury's apparent ecliptic longitude stops changing direction (the station), to the minute, using Astronomy Engine. The full 1950–2050 table is available as a CSV download.
