How we judge compatibility
Traditional astrology compares two signs by the angle between them. Signs four apart share an element (a trine) and are the easiest match; signs two apart (sextile) have complementary elements; opposite signs attract and balance each other; signs three apart (square) or five apart (quincunx) are the most challenging; neighboring signs and the same sign fall in between.
Sun signs are only one layer. For a fuller picture, compare both birth charts, including the Moon, Venus and Mars.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
In traditional astrology, signs of the same element — four signs apart, a trine — are the most harmonious: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius (Fire); Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn (Earth); Gemini, Libra and Aquarius (Air); Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces (Water). Signs two apart (sextiles) and opposite signs are also considered good matches.
Which signs are least compatible?
Signs three apart (squares) and five apart (quincunxes) are traditionally the most challenging, because they share neither element nor easy rhythm. Challenging is not doomed: many lasting couples have these combinations.
Is Sun sign compatibility accurate?
It is a simplification. Astrologers look at the whole chart — especially the Moon, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant. For that, compare both full charts with our synastry calculator.
Astrology is a symbolic and cultural tradition. The planetary positions on this site are calculated with astronomical accuracy; the interpretations describe what astrologers associate with them and are not scientifically validated predictions about personality, relationships or the future.
