Void of Course Moon: Last Aspects, Sign Ingresses & Calculation

By Natal Chart Lab ·

In this calculator, a void-of-course Moon window starts at the Moon’s last exact major aspect within a zodiac sign and ends at its next sign ingress. The result depends on which planets and aspects the calendar includes. Two calendars can disagree because their rules differ.

Check the current status on Moon sign today. This article explains the rule behind that tool rather than treating one convention as universal.

Which aspects and bodies count?

We include exact conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions: separations of 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 180°. The Moon is compared with the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Nodes, Lilith, Chiron, minor aspects and aspect orbs are excluded. If the Moon makes no counted aspect during a sign stay, the entire stay is marked void.

A traditional seven-body approach excludes Uranus, Neptune and Pluto from the aspect partners. Removing these bodies may move the last counted aspect earlier and lengthen a void window. Other astrological definitions exist too. A result should always be quoted with its rule; “the void Moon starts at this time” without a convention is incomplete.

How the last aspect is found

First locate consecutive lunar sign ingresses from tropical apparent geocentric longitude. Search backward within that sign stay for the last exact counted aspect. The implementation brackets aspects in three-hour steps and refines crossings by bisection to a one-minute search interval. Set the void start to that aspect and the end to the next ingress. This is an exact-aspect convention, not a fixed number of hours before ingress.

Times are displayed to the minute, which is a numerical reporting resolution rather than an independently established error bound. A rounded event at an ingress boundary should be compared using the same ephemeris and boundary convention.

Live data and verification

Current sky JSON API includes seven-day void windows, their last aspects and next ingress. Inspect the calculation code and methodology. The API and this table update on request subject to caching; the timestamp identifies the calculation instant. The underlying planetary positions come from Astronomy Engine.

Astronomical timings do not establish that starting a project during a void Moon changes its outcome. Keep the calculation separate from that astrological interpretation.
