Frequently asked questions

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Astrologers read it as your outward style and first impressions.

Why does the rising sign need my birth time?

Because Earth turns, the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon every day. A new sign rises roughly every two hours, so the time — and place — of birth decides it.

Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. "Ascendant" is the exact degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at birth, and the rising sign is the sign that degree falls in. This page works as an Ascendant calculator: the result shows the Ascendant to the minute of arc.

What is the "Big Three" in astrology?

Your Sun, Moon and rising signs. Together they summarize identity (Sun), emotional needs (Moon) and outward style (rising).

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. Any of the twelve signs is possible on a given day. If you only know a time range, try both ends of it; this calculator also tells you how many minutes your time can be off before the sign changes.
