Frequently asked questions

What is a decan in astrology?

Each zodiac sign spans 30°, and a decan is one 10° third of it. The first decan expresses the sign most purely; the second and third mix in the other two signs of the same element. There are 36 decans in all.

How do I know my decan?

Find the degree of your Sun: 0°–9° is the first decan, 10°–19° the second and 20°–29° the third. This calculator does it from your birth date, and also gives your Moon decan and, with a birth time, your rising decan.

Which decan system does this use?

The modern triplicity system for the descriptions and sub-rulers (for example, the second decan of Aries is sub-ruled by Leo and the Sun). The traditional Chaldean face ruler is listed too; it follows the planetary order Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon starting with Mars at 0° Aries.

Why do decan dates differ between websites?

The Sun reaches each 10° mark at a slightly different time every year, and on a different calendar day depending on time zone. Lists of fixed dates are approximate; your birth date and place give the exact decan.

Astrology is a symbolic and cultural tradition. The planetary positions on this site are calculated with astronomical accuracy; the interpretations describe what astrologers associate with them and are not scientifically validated predictions about personality, relationships or the future.
