Solar and lunar eclipses in astrology

A solar eclipse happens at a New Moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. A lunar eclipse happens at a Full Moon, when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow. Both need the Moon near one of its nodes, the two points where its orbit crosses the Sun’s path, which is why eclipses arrive in seasons about six months apart and move backward through the zodiac in pairs of opposite signs over about 18 months.

Astrologers read eclipses as turning points: solar eclipses for beginnings, lunar eclipses for culminations and release. Eclipses near the North Node are traditionally linked to growth and those near the South Node to endings. To see whether an eclipse touches your own chart, compare its degree with your planets in the birth chart calculator.

How are these eclipse dates calculated?

With Astronomy Engine, which finds each eclipse from the positions of the Sun, Moon and Earth’s shadow. Local circumstances are computed for 15 major cities. The table covers 1950–2050.
