Astrocartography: How Far Do Lines Move in 10 Minutes?

By Cheng Xu ·

A ten-minute birth-time change can move an astrocartography line’s equator crossing by roughly 270–280 km in the example below. That is an illustrative calculation, not a fixed displacement for every planet, latitude or line.

The astrocartography calculator maps where each planet rises, sets or meets the meridian at one instant. To examine time uncertainty, keep the birth date and birthplace fixed and recalculate with the earliest and latest plausible times.

The same reference birth, ten minutes later

Invented reference birth: June 15, 1990, 14:30, Singapore (UTC+08:00), latitude 1.2897°, longitude 103.8501°. The UTC instant is 1990-06-15 06:30 UTC. All positions use the tropical zodiac and apparent geocentric longitude.

We compare 14:30 and 14:40 local Singapore time, equivalent to 06:30 and 06:40 UTC. The destination stays Lisbon, Portugal at 38.7223° north, 9.1393° west. Changing the destination is not changing the birth instant.

Longitudes are signed east-positive; negative shifts are westward. MC means upper meridian culmination and ASC means geometric rising. The Moon’s own motion makes its shift differ from the Sun’s. The Lisbon columns measure the shortest spherical distance to the relevant line semicircle, rather than the distance between equator crossings.

Why “one degree every four minutes” is an approximation

Earth’s rotation moves the local meridian through the sky, while planets also move relative to the stars. A meridian line’s longitude comes from the planet’s right ascension minus Greenwich apparent sidereal time. Holding right ascension fixed gives the familiar rotation estimate; recalculating a real planet adds its own motion.

At the equator one degree of longitude spans about 111 km on our spherical Earth model. Along a parallel at latitude φ, the local east–west scale is reduced by cos φ. An ASC or DSC line is curved on the map, and its latitude-dependent shape also depends on declination. Do not apply the equator distance as a universal distance to a line.

How to handle an uncertain birth time

Compare both ends of your plausible interval and inspect the destination each time. Do not assume that ten minutes is harmless or that every line moves by the same distance. With no useful time estimate, a precise personal map is not supported. The birth-time comparison guide shows the related changes in natal angles and houses.

Method and limits

We use apparent geocentric planet centres rotated to equatorial coordinates of date. ASC lines follow a zero-altitude geometric horizon without atmospheric refraction or topocentric lunar parallax. Distances use a sphere of radius 6,371.0088 km. Equator arc length is radius multiplied by the absolute wrapped longitude shift in radians; it is a specific comparison measure, not a uniform displacement of the entire line.

No distance threshold has been scientifically validated as an influence radius, and these calculations cannot identify a place guaranteed to improve a relationship or career. The table measures map geometry only. Values rounded to hundredths of a kilometre support reproducibility, not metre-level real-world accuracy.

Download the unrounded comparison data (JSON). To reproduce it, run node scripts/build-comparison-research.ts from the project repository. The script uses the same calculation modules and saved station table as our tools. This is reproducibility within one implementation, not an independent accuracy check.
