The eight Moon phases
New Moon · Waxing crescent · First quarter · Waxing gibbous · Full Moon · Waning gibbous · Last quarter · Waning crescent. What each phase looks like and means; every phase 1950–2050 (CSV).
The Moon takes about 29.5 days (a synodic month) to go from New Moon back to New Moon. The four principal phases are instants: New Moon, first quarter, full Moon and last quarter. The names in between (waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, waning crescent) cover the days between them; here each name covers a 45° slice of the Moon’s angle from the Sun.
Illumination and phase angle are different measures: at first quarter the Moon is “half” lit (50%) but a quarter of the way through its cycle. The Moon looks full to the eye for a night or two around the exact full Moon, which is why calendars give a single instant.

Waning. It shrinks until the New Moon on Mon, Nov 9, 2:02 AM ET.
Is the Moon phase the same everywhere?
Yes. The phase and illumination are the same worldwide at a given moment; only the local clock time and date differ. In the Southern Hemisphere the Moon looks flipped, so a waxing Moon is lit on the left instead of the right.
How is the phase calculated?
From the Moon’s geocentric ecliptic longitude minus the Sun’s (Astronomy Engine). 0° is New Moon, 90° first quarter, 180° full Moon and 270° last quarter. Illumination is the lit fraction of the disc seen from Earth’s centre.
