The 3rd house in astrology
Communication, siblings and the local world. The 3rd house is the everyday world around you: conversation, messages, early schooling, brothers and sisters, neighbours and short journeys. It describes how you take in information and pass it on.
What the 3rd house covers
- Talking, writing and learning
- Siblings and neighbours
- Short trips
- Daily environment
Planets in the 3rd house
Mercury is at home in this house’s themes, so astrologers look closely at Mercury’s sign alongside any planets here. Planets in the 3rd are read through the way you speak and think and through relationships with siblings and people nearby.
An empty 3rd house
With no planets here, the cusp sign describes your communication style and its ruler shows where your thinking is directed.
Where the 3rd house sits in the chart
The 3rd house is a cadent house. Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) fall away from the angles and are associated with learning, adjustment and transition. It corresponds to ♊︎ Gemini in the natural zodiac. In Hellenistic astrology it was called the house of the Goddess, and it is the “joy” of the Moon, the house where that planet was said to rejoice.
The Sun crosses every house once a day. Near an equinox at mid-latitudes, someone born around about midnight to 2 a.m. local solar time has the Sun in the 3rd house.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 3rd house represent in astrology?
The 3rd house is the everyday world around you: conversation, messages, early schooling, brothers and sisters, neighbours and short journeys. It describes how you take in information and pass it on.
What does it mean to have planets in the 3rd house?
Mercury is at home in this house’s themes, so astrologers look closely at Mercury’s sign alongside any planets here. Planets in the 3rd are read through the way you speak and think and through relationships with siblings and people nearby.
What if my 3rd house is empty?
With no planets here, the cusp sign describes your communication style and its ruler shows where your thinking is directed. Most charts have several empty houses, because ten planets are spread over twelve houses.
Which sign and planet rule the 3rd house?
In the natural zodiac the 3rd house corresponds to Gemini, ruled by Mercury. In your own chart, the sign on the 3rd house cusp and that sign’s ruler matter more.
How do I find my 3rd house?
Enter your birth date, exact time and place above. Houses depend on the time and location of birth, so a chart without a birth time has no houses.
Is the Sun in the 3rd house linked to my birth time?
Yes. The Sun crosses all twelve houses each day. Near an equinox at mid-latitudes, the Sun is in the 3rd house for births around about midnight to 2 a.m. local solar time; seasons and latitude stretch these windows.
