Planets in the 12th house
Planets here are read as working behind the scenes or coming out in private. Neptune is associated with imagination and spirituality, Saturn with private burdens, the Sun with a need for time alone. Many modern astrologers also read the 12th as compassion and service to people out of sight.
An empty 12th house
An empty 12th house is common; its cusp sign and ruler describe how you rest and what you keep private.
Where the 12th house sits in the chart
The 12th house is a cadent house. Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) fall away from the angles and are associated with learning, adjustment and transition. It corresponds to ♓︎ Pisces in the natural zodiac. In Hellenistic astrology it was called the house of the Bad Spirit, and it is the “joy” of Saturn, the house where that planet was said to rejoice.
The Sun crosses every house once a day. Near an equinox at mid-latitudes, someone born around about 6 to 8 a.m., just after sunrise local solar time has the Sun in the 12th house.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 12th house represent in astrology?
The 12th house sits just above the eastern horizon, the last house before the Ascendant. It is associated with what is hidden or withdrawn: solitude, the unconscious, dreams, secrets, self-undoing and places of retreat such as hospitals, monasteries and prisons.
What does it mean to have planets in the 12th house?

What if my 12th house is empty?
An empty 12th house is common; its cusp sign and ruler describe how you rest and what you keep private. Most charts have several empty houses, because ten planets are spread over twelve houses.
Which sign and planet rule the 12th house?
In the natural zodiac the 12th house corresponds to Pisces, ruled by Jupiter and Neptune. In your own chart, the sign on the 12th house cusp and that sign’s ruler matter more.
How do I find my 12th house?
Enter your birth date, exact time and place above. Houses depend on the time and location of birth, so a chart without a birth time has no houses.
Is the Sun in the 12th house linked to my birth time?
Yes. The Sun crosses all twelve houses each day. Near an equinox at mid-latitudes, the Sun is in the 12th house for births around about 6 to 8 a.m., just after sunrise local solar time; seasons and latitude stretch these windows.
