Probability of Being Born With Retrograde Planets (1951–2050)
By Cheng Xu ·
Having at least one retrograde planet in your birth chart is the norm, not the exception: across the 36,525 days of 1951–2050, at least one of the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto is retrograde 90.42% of the time, and all eight move direct simultaneously only 9.58% of the time (3497.41 days). Individually, Venus is retrograde rarest (7.27%) and Pluto most often (43.62%).

Time spent retrograde by planet, 1951–2050
We clipped all retrograde intervals in /data/retrogrades.json to the exact 100-year UTC window from 1951-01-01 00:00 UTC to 2051-01-01 00:00 UTC (36,525 elapsed 24-hour days) and summed each planet’s retrograde duration.
| Planet | Overlapping cycles | Retrograde elapsed days | Retrograde time share | Direct time share | Annual calendar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 316 | 7006.09 | 19.18% | 80.82% | Mercury 2026 |
| Venus | 63 | 2654.14 | 7.27% | 92.73% | Venus 2026 |
| Mars | 47 | 3456.13 | 9.46% | 90.54% | Mars 2027 |
| Jupiter | 92 | 10980.33 | 30.06% | 69.94% | Jupiter 2026 |
| Saturn | 97 | 13383.76 | 36.64% | 63.36% | Saturn 2026 |
| Uranus | 100 | 14906.25 | 40.81% | 59.19% | Uranus 2026 |
| Neptune | 100 | 15882.03 | 43.48% | 56.52% | Neptune 2026 |
| Pluto | 100 | 15932.88 | 43.62% | 56.38% | Pluto 2026 |
Why outer planets are retrograde over 40% of the time
From Earth, a superior planet (Mars through Pluto) appears retrograde around opposition, when Earth passes between that planet and the Sun. The farther a planet orbits from the Sun, the slower its heliocentric angular speed, so Earth’s orbital motion dominates the viewing angle over nearly half of Earth’s yearly orbit. Mars orbits closest outside Earth and is retrograde only 9.46% of the time, whereas Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spend 40.81% to 43.62% of the century retrograde.
For inner planets, Venus (7.27%) and Mercury (19.18%) turn retrograde around inferior conjunction. These exact time shares also drive the rarity badges shown on our Big Three share cards; see how to check if you were born during Mercury retrograde and how long each planet stays retrograde per cycle.
How many retrograde planets is normal in a birth chart?
Using the interval sweep from our simultaneous retrogrades study, the table below gives the exact share of time in 1951–2050 when 0 through 8 planets (Mercury–Pluto) are retrograde at once:
| Simultaneous retrogrades | Elapsed days in 1951–2050 | Share of 100-year window |
|---|---|---|
| 0 planets | 3497.41 | 9.58% |
| 1 planets | 7454.48 | 20.41% |
| 2 planets | 9519.38 | 26.06% |
| 3 planets | 8918.65 | 24.42% |
| 4 planets | 5103.35 | 13.97% |
| 5 planets | 1659.70 | 4.54% |
| 6 planets | 363.67 | 1.00% |
| 7 planets | 8.36 | 0.02% |
| 8 planets | 0.00 | 0.00% |
More than 70% of the entire century (70.89%) has 1, 2 or 3 planets retrograde simultaneously, with a modal count of 2 planets (26.06%).
Method, Zenodo archive and limits
Shares measure uniform ephemeris time over 1951–2050 UTC rather than a demographic census weighted by birth seasonality. The Sun and Moon never turn retrograde; the mean North Node moves continuously backward and is excluded. Apparent retrograde motion is a perspective effect and does not establish personality or fate predictions.
