Why Do Zodiac Sign Dates Change Each Year? 1950–2050 Cusp Table
By Cheng Xu ·
Zodiac sign dates change from year to year because a tropical year lasts about 365.2422 days rather than an integer 365 days. Across our 1950–2050 table of 101 years, the Sun’s entry into Aries spans 35.87 hours (2048-03-19 22:34 UTC to 1951-03-21 10:26 UTC), touching March 19, 20, 21 in UTC. Cancer spans 37.52 hours across June 20, 21, 22.

Earliest and latest UTC sign ingresses, 1950–2050
Each tropical sign begins at an exact multiple of 30° of apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude, starting with 0° Aries at the March equinox. The table below compares all 101 ingresses for each sign in 1950–2050 and measures the time-of-month span between the earliest and latest UTC crossings.
| Sign | UTC dates touched | Earliest UTC ingress | Latest UTC ingress | Window span (hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 19, 20, 21 | 2048-03-19 22:34 UTC | 1951-03-21 10:26 UTC | 35.87 |

How the four-year leap cycle shifts ingress times
In a 365-day common year, the Sun reaches the same ecliptic longitude about 5 hours 49 minutes later on the clock than the year before. After three common years, the crossing has drifted nearly 18 hours later. A leap year inserts February 29 and shifts the calendar label back by 24 hours, slightly over-correcting the four-year drift.
| Year | UTC instant | New York (Eastern) | London (UK) | Singapore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2024-03-20 03:07 UTC | Mar 19, 2024, 23:07 EDT | Mar 20, 2024, 03:07 GMT | Mar 20, 2024, 11:07 GMT+8 |
| 2025 | 2025-03-20 09:02 UTC | Mar 20, 2025, 05:02 EDT | Mar 20, 2025, 09:02 GMT | Mar 20, 2025, 17:02 GMT+8 |
| 2026 | 2026-03-20 14:46 UTC | Mar 20, 2026, 10:46 EDT | Mar 20, 2026, 14:46 GMT | Mar 20, 2026, 22:46 GMT+8 |
| 2027 | 2027-03-20 20:25 UTC | Mar 20, 2027, 16:25 EDT | Mar 20, 2027, 20:25 GMT | Mar 21, 2027, 04:25 GMT+8 |
Notice how the 2024 Aries ingress occurs on March 20 in UTC, London and Singapore, but on the evening of March 19 in New York. In 2027, the same astronomical instant falls on March 20 in New York and London, but on the morning of March 21 in Singapore.
Why “born on the cusp” does not mean two tropical signs
Popular horoscopes print fixed calendar date ranges without a year, time or time zone. When two websites list different cutoff dates for Taurus or Scorpio, they are rounding a moving astronomical boundary to a static calendar day. Once you convert your recorded birth time and birthplace to UTC using historical time-zone rules, the Sun’s center lies on one side of the 30° boundary or the other.
If your birth time is unknown on a transition date, both signs remain candidates for that local calendar day. Use the unknown-birth-time guide to see what can and cannot be settled without a clock time, or compare tropical signs with IAU constellations in our Ophiuchus and constellation boundary guide.
Method and limits
Ingress times come from Astronomy Engine apparent geocentric solar longitudes on the true ecliptic of date, refined by bisection to one-minute resolution. Minute timestamps describe calculation resolution rather than an independently certified one-minute error bound. Astronomical boundary times do not validate personality traits associated with zodiac signs.
