When Is Your Rising Sign the Same as Your Sun Sign? Sunrise Test

By Cheng Xu ·

A common astrology rule of thumb claims that being born at 6:00 a.m. gives you the same rising sign (Ascendant) as your Sun sign. Across 12 seasonal test cases in New York, London and Singapore in 2026, a 06:00 local clock birth produces the Sun’s sign in only 3 of 12 cases—while the actual local clock window for a same-sign Ascendant starts between 04:36 and 07:58 and lasts from 53 to 170 minutes.

Always calculate the exact horizon angle for your date, clock time and city in the rising sign calculator.

Sunrise, 06:00 clock time and same-sign Ascendant windows (2026)

We evaluated the local sunrise time, the Ascendant at local sunrise, the Ascendant at 06:00 local clock time, and the exact minute-by-minute local clock window during which the Ascendant sign matches the Sun sign across four dates in 2026 (March 25, June 25, September 25 and December 25) in three cities.

Five reasons “6 a.m. = same rising sign” fails on a real clock

  1. Seasonal sunrise shift with latitude: In London (51.51° N), sunrise moves from 04:44 BST on June 25 to 08:05 GMT on December 25. At 06:00 on December 25, the Sun is still more than two hours below the eastern horizon, so the preceding sign (Sagittarius) is rising instead of Capricorn.
  2. Time-zone longitude offset and daylight saving time: Singapore uses UTC+08:00 although its longitude (103.85° E) corresponds to UTC+06:55 in local mean solar time. Consequently, solar noon and sunrise occur about an hour later on the clock year-round (sunrise is around 06:53–07:07), so at 06:00 in Singapore the previous sign is rising in all four seasons.
  3. Position of the Sun within its 30° sign: On March 25 the Sun is near 5° Aries. Only 25° of Aries remains below the horizon at sunrise. If you were born on the last day of Aries (around 29° Aries), Aries finishes rising barely minutes after geometric sunrise, and Taurus rises for the rest of the morning.
  4. Unequal rising speeds (oblique ascension): As shown in our rising sign duration table, Aries rises in 53 minutes in London on March 25, whereas Libra takes 170 minutes on September 25.
  5. Refraction vs geometric Ascendant: Almanac sunrise occurs when the Sun’s upper limb is lifted by atmospheric refraction (~50 arcminutes before the geometric center crosses the horizon). That is why the Ascendant at almanac sunrise in the table is already 1° to 2° smaller in longitude than the Sun’s center, starting the same-sign window several minutes before visual sunrise.

Method and limits

We compute sunrise with Astronomy Engine and scan each local day in one-minute steps using our geometric Ascendant formula. Browse daily rising windows by sign on the rising signs hub.
