Void-of-course windows associated with these phases

Each row covers the Moon’s stay in the sign it occupies at that phase. The listed void window can begin later than the phase. It ends when the Moon enters the next sign; it does not mean the Moon is void at the phase itself. For all windows this week, see Moon sign today.

How this Moon calendar is calculated

Full Moon is the instant the Moon’s geocentric ecliptic longitude is 180° from the Sun; New Moon is 0°. We use Astronomy Engine phase searches, the same engine as Moon sign today. The Moon’s position is shown on the tropical zodiac, using apparent geocentric longitude. Times are displayed to the minute; these are calculated estimates.

Each year includes events whose instant falls in that UTC calendar year. A phase near midnight can fall on a different local date, month or year. New York times use America/New_York with daylight saving changes; the downloaded calendar converts UTC into your calendar’s own time zone.

Void of course is an astrological convention: we use the last exact conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto before the Moon leaves its sign. Different planet lists and rules give different windows. The table gives only the window for the sign stay containing each phase, rather than every window in the year. Read the calculation details.

For an independent time reference, see the US Naval Observatory’s primary Moon phases. Phase times and eclipse maximum times are different quantities: a New Moon is not always a solar eclipse, and a Full Moon is not always a lunar eclipse. Check the eclipse calendar for visibility and greatest-eclipse times.
